Self Love Pain

by CombatlinkK

Here are the facts:
in 1989, when all of this started, i was teenager attending seconday school (german: gymnasium), lived on the secluded countryside, in a family of teachers. Trust me when i say: that is totally different from living in the city or village, - or being a normal kid even. Also: we had Arnold, Sylvester, NATO, the cold war, iron curtain, everything was full frontal 80's.

In 1988, finally, the Commodore AMIGA 500 computer became affordable. Which, if the Oktalyzer program was run on it, was able to provide 8 stereo channels, 4 left, 4 right each. These 8 channels could replay 8-Bit 22kHz samples of up to about 10 seconds maximum length at normal pitch, depending on how much expensive RAM the AMIGA was expanded with. All in all for just a few hundred bucks. Done deal, man! Subsequently, from age 16 to 22 i wrote a couple of tracks of the most non-popular electronic music i could come up with.

The bandname was actually coined in 1990 at secondary school, during physics lesson, when my buddy quietly wrote "Combat Link" on a piece of paper and then moved it over to my workspace whispering: it is an important piece of a fighter plane. For computer enthusiast reasons, i added one K and CombatlinkK was born.

Later, in the 2000's, with "Self Love Pain", i decided to compile a selection of early, rough tracks that came up outside an album context. Created during nights of insomnia, some of them, i composed when i was ill and had strong fever, or even when i had too little sleep for weeks. Because sleeping at school during lessons, was damned uncomfortable ;-)

So, all of this took place on the countryside, in the total absence of internet, discotheques, or any city life influence. Like a family sect. Not even urban noise, like playing children or booming cars happened. It was pure undiluted boredom.

And this is what i did with my time - no drugs, no booze, no socializing. Just tracker music all night long.
